Moving house with a pet: a calmer plan

Pets cannot be told that a move is temporary. They read boxes, noise and our stress instead — so a calm move is mostly sequencing: keep routines alive as long as possible, protect the animal on the day, then rebuild familiar rhythms quickly on the other side.

Start planning early

Bring boxes into the home gradually rather than in one weekend, and leave meal, walk and sleep times untouched for as long as the process allows. Use the calm weeks for logistics: choose a new clinic, check the microchip registry details, and plan how the pet will travel.

Moving day: one quiet room

Pack the pet's room last. On the day itself, give the animal one quiet, closed room with familiar things — or better, a sitter's home or a friend the pet knows, away from the noise entirely. Prepare a travel kit as if for a mini vacation: usual food, bowls, medication, documents, and a blanket from the old home.

First days at the new home

Open one room first, furnished with the familiar bed, bowls and toys, and let the pet explore at its own pace. For cats, choose a quiet litter spot away from noise and keep them indoors initially. Rebuild rhythms at the old times
